This is what we got up to Friday afternoon of Week 1
We learnt about locomotor and non locomotor movements.
Locomotor movement is when you move from one place to another, you may do this by walking, running, dancing etc.
Non locomotor movement is when you stay on the spot and don't go anywhere, you may twist, bend, sway, balance or stretch on the spot.
We practised "wandering" around the room to some cool music and had to listen to the instructions - one clap = rolling from our shoulders, two claps = rolling from our neck, three claps = changing direction. This meant we could put our knowledge of locomotor and non locomotor movement into action. A lot of skill was involved here - listening to the music, wandering around the room keeping safe from others and listening to the instructions and responding.
We then did a small dance rotation to some music using a range of words as inspiration for our movements. These included - balance, roll, shimmy, wiggle, jump. As the music play we stayed in our groups and demonstrated what we thought each movement would look like. It was lots and lots of fun!
You could try all of this at home! It is super easy and the children absolutely loved it. It is a great way to get the children moving and to helps develop those gross motor skills, these include:
4. Knowing body space
